The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has taken a fresh swipe at the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, hinting that he should have stayed out of politics.

The Minister, who spoke on Monday at the 107th NEC meeting of his faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja, said Makinde could have remained a contractor if he wasn’t ready to play real politics.

The former Rivers State Governor, who has been at loggerheads with Makinde, told him to go home and rest, pointing out that almost all the PDP Governors have defected to the APC.

Naija News reports that he said this a few days after Governor Makinde again publicly accused the Minister of working to hold the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) down for President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Wike, who berated the wave of defections from the PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), said those who accused him of working for the APC were nowhere to be found while he remains in the party.

Despite taking a swipe at Makinde and the defectors, Wike said he is open to reconciliation, and the reconciliatory process would even continue after the planned PDP National Convention.

The lingering leadership crisis rocking the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) escalated on Monday as police arrested factional president, Tajudeen Baruwa, despite a court order reportedly affirming him as the authentic chairman.

The arrest followed a dramatic takeover of the union’s National Secretariat in Abuja by members of the Baruwa-led faction.

Tension heightened during the incident as a supporter of the faction was reportedly shot when security operatives moved to disperse those present at the secretariat.

Details surrounding the shooting remained unclear as of press time, but the development further underscored the volatility of the crisis within the union.

Members of the Baruwa-led group were seen in a viral video taking control of the secretariat, removing and destroying portraits of Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo.

The action signalled a bold attempt by the faction to assert control over the union’s leadership structure.

The NURTW has been embroiled in a protracted leadership crisis for over two years, following a disputed delegates’ conference meant to produce new national officers.

A former acting Accountant General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, 72, has been sentenced to 72 years in prison for laundering N868,465,000.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) prosecuted Nwabuoku on nine charges of money laundering.

Evidence presented in court showed that funds meant for the Ministry of Defence were transferred into multiple corporate accounts and used for personal gain.

The accounts, held under company names, were not directly linked to Nwabuoku, a move that appeared intended to hide the source of the money.

The court detailed how millions of naira were deposited into accounts of companies including Temeeo Synergy Concept Limited, Turge Global Investment Limited, Laptev Bridge Limited, and Arafura Transnational Afro Limited.

For instance, N262 million went into Temeeo Synergy Concept, N202 million into Turge Global, and N281 million into Laptev Bridge Limited. The judge said these transactions were unlawful and formed part of a deliberate plan to convert government funds to private use.

HE urged them to confidently contest positions at both state and federal levels, stating that not having governors from the PDP going into the 2027 polls should not deter members from participating in the process, adding that the situation won’t determine the outcome of elections.

Naija News reports that Wike made the declaration on Monday while speaking at the 107th NEC meeting of his faction of the PDP in Abuja.

“Those afraid that they will not win elections because they don’t have a governor from the PDP in their state, that is a lie. Remove fear from your body and have confidence,” Wike said.
