Iranian Hackers Breach FBI Director’s Personal Email, Leak Private Photos

by · Naija News

Hackers connected to Iran’s government have compromised FBI Director Kash Patel’s personal email account and published stolen photographs and documents online.

Officials from the United States Department of Justice confirmed the Friday breach and verified the authenticity of the leaked materials. The cyber attack targeted Patel’s private email rather than official FBI systems, exposing personal mail spanning over a decade.

The hacking group Handala Hack Team claimed responsibility for the operation and posted the stolen content on their website. Security researchers described the breach as affecting personal files, including family photos and private business mail from 2010 to 2022.

Naija News gathered that Western cybersecurity experts identify Handala as one of several fronts operated by Iranian government intelligence units.

Attack Exposes Personal Documents, Not FBI Systems

Reacting to the incident, according to reports, Independent cybersecurity analyst Ron Fabela reviewed the leaked materials and characterised them as ordinary personal information rather than sensitive government data.

“This isn’t an FBI compromise — it’s someone’s personal junk drawer,” Fabela stated.

The hackers also published personal photographs showing Patel in casual settings before his appointment as FBI director. The stolen emails contain personal, business and travel correspondence he exchanged with various contacts over the years.

US intelligence officials have issued repeated warnings about potential cyber retaliation from Tehran-linked groups following military operations against Iran by Washington and Israel last month.

Second Iranian Cyber Attack On FBI Chief

Meanwhile, Patel previously faced Iranian hacking attempts in late 2024, weeks before his FBI appointment. Officials informed him that hackers had accessed some of his personal communications during the earlier attack.

The 2024 breach formed part of a wider campaign by Chinese and Iranian hackers targeting incoming American administration officials. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, former interim US Attorney Lindsey Halligan and Donald Trump Jr. also fell victim to those attacks.

Additionally, the same group behind Patel’s email breach also attacked a major American medical device manufacturer earlier in March, disrupting operations at the Michigan-based firm. Handala claimed that the assault served as retaliation for a missile strike on an Iranian elementary school that Tehran says killed 168 children.

Washington’s Justice Department accuses the hackers of working for Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security. US authorities seized websites the group used to coordinate operations, but the Iranian operatives continue launching attacks and spreading propaganda online.
