Biden To Address Americans Today, Pledges Peaceful Transition Of Power To Trump
by Enioluwa Adeniyi · Naija NewsUnited States President Joe Biden is set to address the nation on Thursday, affirming his commitment to a peaceful transfer of power to Donald Trump after the Republican’s decisive victory over Democratic nominee Kamala Harris in the recent presidential election.
In what is expected to be a solemn and historic address, the 81-year-old president will speak from the White House Rose Garden at 11 am (1600 GMT) to “discuss the election results and the transition” to Trump’s second term.
President Biden withdrew from the race in July 2024, endorsing Vice President Harris as the Democratic nominee.
However, Trump’s unexpected political resurgence has posed a significant challenge to Biden’s legacy, which he is determined to protect by ensuring a smooth transition.
Biden’s approach is in stark contrast to Trump’s refusal to concede the 2020 election, a move that led to the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol by Trump’s supporters.
Unlike his predecessor, Biden aims to set an example of democratic resilience and unity.
The White House confirmed that Biden had spoken with Trump on Wednesday. “President Biden emphasised his commitment to ensuring a smooth transition and underscored the importance of uniting the country,” the statement read.
Despite their history of fierce rivalry, Biden has reached out to Trump and invited him to the White House, signalling a bid to promote national cohesion.
Trump’s campaign spokesman, Steven Cheung, confirmed that Trump “looks forward to the meeting, which will take place shortly, and very much appreciated the call.”
This anticipated encounter would be their first since Biden’s faltering debate against Trump in June, a turning point that eventually led to Biden’s withdrawal from the race.
