A woman has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment with labour for trafficking two women to China after allegedly recruiting them through TikTok with promises of marriage to Chinese men and financial benefits.

According to the case details, the defendant, Khaing Thazin Htun, also known as Khaing, contacted a young woman from Twante Township in Yangon Region and another woman from Wakema Township in Ayeyawady Region through her TikTok account under the name “Khaing Yi.”

She allegedly persuaded the two women by offering them opportunities to marry Chinese men, telling them they would need to stay in China for six months to one year and would receive 30,000 Chinese yuan. She also reportedly promised monthly allowances of K2 million to K3 million from their prospective husbands, along with travel expenses, and said they could return to Myanmar after one year.

Investigations reportedly found that the two women were subsequently taken to a guesthouse in North Okkalapa Township for the purpose of trafficking them to China.

Following the investigation, the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Police Force, Mandalay Unit No. 11, filed a complaint against the suspect. The case was registered at Pyigyitagon Township Police Station under Case No. 128/2026 and prosecuted under Section 35 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Law.

On October 15, the Maha Aung Myay District Court sentenced Khaing Thazin Htun, also known as Khaing, to 10 years’ imprisonment with labour under Section 35 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Law.
