5.3-magnitude earthquake hits near Thabeikkyin; Tremors felt in Mandalay, Pyin Oo Lwin, Sagaing

A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Thabeikkyin Township on the morning of July 17, with tremors felt across Mandalay, Pyin Oo Lwin, Sagaing, and several other nearby areas, according to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH).

The DMH said the earthquake occurred at 7:56 am. Its epicenter was located about 56 miles north of the Mandalay Seismological Observatory, approximately 4 miles south-southeast of Thabeikkyin Township, at 22.83°N latitude and 95.99°E longitude, with a depth of 6 kilometers.

Residents in Mandalay, Pyin Oo Lwin, Sagaing, Shwebo, and Kyaukme reported feeling the tremor noticeably.

"The earthquake was obvious. It felt like the bed was shaking," a Mandalay resident said.
