1,476 Myanmar nationals repatriated from Malaysia by three naval vessels
· Eleven Media Group Co., LtdA total of 1,476 Myanmar nationals who had completed their sentences in Malaysia but faced difficulties returning to Myanmar have been repatriated aboard three Myanmar naval vessels, according to reports.
The three vessels — the Myanmar Navy ship Mottama, the seagoing hospital ship Thanlwin, and the naval vessel Sin Phyu Shin — arrived at Lumut Port in Malaysia on the morning of September 28.
The Myanmar nationals had been detained at immigration detention centres after serving sentences for illegal stay and other immigration-related offences in Malaysia. Following verification of their identities, 1,476 individuals who were experiencing difficulties returning to Myanmar were repatriated.
Officials from the Myanmar Embassy in Malaysia and the Defence Attaché Office, representing the Army, Navy and Air Force, formally received the Myanmar nationals from Malaysian immigration authorities.
The three vessels departed Lumut Port for Yangon on the evening of September 29, according to reports.
Meanwhile, Malaysia began the first phase of a programme to repatriate Myanmar migrants on September 29, with the first group of around 1,500 Myanmar migrants being sent back to Myanmar, according to international media reports.
The group was reportedly the first batch of 5,000 Myanmar nationals who had agreed to return voluntarily from immigration detention centres, according to the Malaysian government.
