Department of Justice Reportedly Approves Paramount-Warner Bros. Merger
by Bethy Squires · VULTUREThe DOJ says PS-WBD is A-OK. Multiple outlets are reporting that the Justice Department’s antitrust division has signed off on Paramount Skydance’s $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. A formal announcement from the Justice Department is expected soon.
To say the proposed merger has been controversial would be an understatement. According to Variety, the smushing of Paramount Skydance into Warner Bros. Discovery would “save” the new megacorp $6 billion, presumably from layoffs. An open letter in opposition to the merger has 5,500 signatures. The attorneys general of 10 states are reportedly looking into filing antitrust objections to the merger on the state level, should David Ellison encounter no federal opposition. “This is terrible news for every American who doesn’t want Trump-aligned billionaires to control what they watch and how much they pay,” Senator Elizabeth Warren said on social media in reaction to the DOJ approval news. “The Paramount-Warner Bros. deal has reeked of corruption and influence-peddling. This fight isn’t over. State AGs must block this merger.”
