Jessica Chastain Is Still Mad About The Savant’s Delay
by Isabella Albaig · VULTUREMore than a year after Apple TV postponed the release of Jessica Chastain’s crime thriller The Savant, the star revisited why the show is still so important to her. In her October cover feature for Porter, Chastain explained her moral stance on the show’s significance after it was pulled amid increased political violence. “I felt responsible to a lot of people, to all of the actors in the series … to the real person I played, I felt accountability to her because of the sacrifices that she’s made and the difficult things she’s done to keep us all safe,” Chastain told the outlet. “I really had to go on record that I thought [the postponement] was a mistake … I learned that it’s okay to be honest. You can be honest in a kind and respectful way and feel like you’re still speaking your truth, you’re still authentic to who you are without being fearful of — I don’t know — I guess of never working again. Again, women are [supposed] to feel grateful. Well, we can be grateful and we can also be honest about things. We can be both things at once.”
In The Savant, Chastain, who also helped executive-produce the show, plays the title role of an undercover investigator who embeds in white-supremacist online forums to find and take down domestic extremists before they act, a story inspired by true reported events. However, following a string of violent political incidents, most notably the assassination of Charlie Kirk on September 10, 2025, Apple TV silently pulled the show from its release schedule mere days before it was set to premiere. At the time, Chastain openly disagreed with the decision, sharing a statement to her Instagram on September 24, 2025. “These incidents, though far from encompassing the full range of violence witnessed in the United States, illustrate a broader mindset that crosses the political spectrum and must be confronted,” she wrote. “I’ve never shied away from difficult subjects, and while I wish this show wasn’t so relevant, unfortunately it is. The Savant is about the heroes who work every day to stop violence before it happens, and honoring their courage feels more urgent than ever.”
Chastain told Porter she’s attracted to roles like the one she took on in The Savant that can “push boundaries on what people believe a woman can be in society.” Her upcoming horror film, Other Mommy, in theaters October 9, also tests those boundaries, allowing her to explore female power and challenge society’s expectations of motherhood, though in a slightly more deranged way.
