Meanwhile, Trump has said the Houthis are “misbehaving very badly” after a run of attacks on Saudi airports, including King Khalid International in Riyadh and King Fahd International in Dammam, Al Jazeera said. Saudi Arabia has extended the suspension of flights at King Khalid airport until Saturday after the repeated Houthi attacks, which have killed at least 18 people. On Monday night, Saudi forces shot down a Houthi ballistic missile aimed at Riyadh. The Saudi-led coalition said it destroyed the missile, and Civil Defence later said the threat to the capital had ended. The Houthis said they had targeted the airport, and their spokesman, Yahya Saree, called the strike “precise”.
Airport shut and flights cancelled: A Notice to Airmen (Notam) says the Riyadh airport will remain closed until 17 October. Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority extended the suspension so it can check the safety of the facilities. According to aviation data firm Cirium, 486 of 1,048 flights due to leave Saudi Arabia on Monday were cancelled, nearly half. A further 271 flights are already cancelled for Tuesday. Gulf Air has also cancelled its Riyadh flights until 17 October.
An Indian national, Mohammed Yousuf Ali, died in the 10 October attack on the airport, the Indian embassy said. His family chose to hold the funeral in Riyadh, and Indian ambassador Vipul attended. The embassy said three injured Indians remain in intensive care and two more have been admitted to intensive care.
Key world developments:
- Trump on Iran: President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House on Monday that the US midterm elections would not change his Iran policy. He said the war would end “very soon” and that oil prices would then “drop like a rock”.
- Oil Prices: Oil prices slipped on Tuesday, pulling back after a near-$2 rally in the previous session as market participants weighed potential supply disruptions from attacks in Saudi Arabia against the prospect of increased Russian diesel exports.
- Hormuz ship strike: A tanker leaving the Strait of Hormuz was hit by an unknown projectile on Monday, according to UKMTO. Iranian military adviser Yahya Rahim Safavi said Tehran aims to manage and limit traffic through the strait, not close it fully.
- Iran reviews US offer: Iran is reviewing the latest US proposal on reopening Hormuz and is passing messages through mediators, a foreign ministry spokesman said. Qatar and Pakistan are among those acting as go-betweens.
- Warning on data centres: Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said regional data cables, data centres and AI facilities could be “in the line of fire” if the war restarts, Iranian state media said.

Bernie Sanders targets Elon Musk over $366 million poll spending amid Ambani’s Jio-Starlink row
Elon Musk’s allegation that powerful business interests are blocking Starlink’s entry into India, in remarks seen as a swipe at billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio, has put the SpaceX CEO’s India ambitions back in focus. The controversy comes as Musk faces criticism from US Senator Bernie Sanders over his reported $366 million in political spending during the 2026 US midterm election cycle to help President Donald Trump-led Republicans retain control of Congress. Sanders has accused Musk of using his growing wealth to strengthen the political influence of billionaires, calling for an end to what he describes as “oligarchy”.
Sanders, a US Senator from Vermont, called for an end to oligarchy in an X post and linked Musk’s political spending to the trillionaire’s growing wealth after Trump returned to the Oval Office and won the US presidential election in 2024. Sanders argued that reported financial gains that Musk received after Trump’s electoral victory weren’t enough to deter him from spending more to help Republicans get through in the upcoming midterm polls.
Sanders wrote, “Elon Musk spent $290 million to elect Trump. It paid off. Since his election, Musk got $696 billion richer & became the world’s 1st trillionaire. But that’s not enough. Now, Musk is spending $366 million to keep Republicans in control of Congress. STOP MUSK. STOP OLIGARCHY.”

Supertankers turn away from Persian Gulf amid Iran attacks
A growing number of empty supertankers are turning away from the Persian Gulf as attacks by Iran threaten a key hub for wartime oil shipments, Bloomberg reported Monday.
At least 10 very large crude carriers and several Suezmax tankers approaching the UAE port of Fujairah have stopped or reversed course in recent days, according to tanker-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg.
Fujairah has served as a staging point for vessels collecting crude through ship-to-ship transfers outside the Strait of Hormuz, allowing shuttle tankers to make the riskier passage through the waterway.
Bloomberg said a sustained retreat by empty supertankers could slow Persian Gulf oil exports by reducing the number of vessels available to receive crude from shuttle tankers.

Oil ticks lower as Russia diesel supply prospects counter Gulf supply risks
Oil prices edged lower on Tuesday after climbing by nearly $2 a barrel in the previous session, as traders assessed supply risks from attacks on Saudi Arabia while weighing the prospect of additional diesel supplies from Russia.
Brent crude futures fell 61 cents, or 0.57%, to $106.04 a barrel by 0000 GMT while US West Texas Intermediate crude futures were down 47 cents, or 0.5%, at $93.27 a barrel.
Brent futures settled at $106.65 a barrel on Monday, the highest since September 15.
US President Donald Trump said Russia had agreed to supply diesel to global markets, and his administration temporarily lifted US sanctions on Russian fuel designed to deprive Moscow of revenue for its war on Ukraine.
Additional supplies could help alleviate tightness in global fuel markets, tempering some of the supply concerns that have supported crude prices recently.

The Houthis also said in a statement that they targeted an airbase in Khamis Mushait in the kingdom's southwest with a drone. There was no immediate Saudi confirmation.
A Notice to Airmen issued on Monday showed King Khalid International Airport will stay closed until 2100 GMT on October 17.

US hopes diesel deal can 'soften' Moscow on peace talks, sources say
US envoys told Ukrainian officials on Friday that a deal to allow Russian diesel exports is part of an effort to draw Russia back to negotiations, three people familiar with the meeting told Reuters. Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who met the Ukrainians in Miami, also said Russian President Vladimir Putin is not ready to negotiate an end to the war, which is now in its fifth year. They said the deal could help restart three-way talks between the US, Russia and Ukraine.
The diesel deal: Under the deal announced last week, Russia will supply more than 2.25 million barrels of diesel to US and global markets. Some US lawmakers say it gives Moscow cash for the war without forcing Putin to make concessions.
Refinery strikes and ceasefire: Kushner repeated a request that Ukraine stop hitting Russian refineries, according to two of the sources. Trump announced an energy ceasefire on Sunday, but neither side has confirmed it. Russia struck energy sites in Ukraine on Monday.
Doubts and tension: Ukrainian officials were sceptical and see the approach as using business deals to appease Moscow, the sources said. Zelenskyy has called the diesel deal a "gift to Putin".

The warnings had served to highlight the violence undermining the kingdom's efforts to project an image of calm to its people and the world during its war with Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis.

Riyadh airport closure extended after Iran-backed Houthi attacks
Saudi Arabia extended the suspension of operations at Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport as authorities conduct safety inspections following attacks by the Iran-backed Houthis, the General Authority of Civil Aviation announced Monday.
GACA said the extension was needed to complete safety checks and verify the operational readiness of airport facilities. It did not say when operations would resume.
A Pakistani resident was killed and 11 people were injured in an attack on the airport Sunday. The Saudi-led coalition said an unidentified projectile struck Terminal 4 and that air defenses intercepted a cruise missile near the airport.
The attack followed a Houthi strike on the airport Saturday that killed 12 people and injured 309 others.
