Very early trends show BJP blazing past Opposition, leading in 59 seats as of 9.05 am. The election for the 126-member Assembly was held on April 9. The state recorded a voter turnout of 85.38% — higher than the previous record in 2016, when the BJP first came to power after 15 years of Congress rule.

What are the Exit polls saying? Several exit polls, including Axis My India JVC, have projected the ruling BJP-plus led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to win an easy majority with over 80 seats. Numbers for the Congress-led alliance range from 22 to 39 across various exit polls. The majority mark in the Assam Assembly is 64 seats. Nine seats are reserved for scheduled castes, and sixteen are for scheduled tribes.

Previous Assam Assembly Election Results: In 2021, the BJP-plus had won 75 seats, with the Congress and its partners at 50 seats, and 1 seat going to an Independent. Assam Assembly Election Results 2026 LIVE Updates: Will BJP be able to pull off a clear majority in Assam?
All eyes will on the BJP’s tally today, The exit poll results have predicted a decisive mandate for the incumbent BJP led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
While the BJP has gone from strength to strength in Assam over the past decade, it has yet to get a clear majority on its own in the 126-member state Assembly. Both in 2016, when it first came to power in Assam, and in 2021, when it returned to power for the second term, the party bagged 60 seats, crossing the majority mark with its allies.
The Western Assam region, known as Lower Assam, in particular saw a drastic redrawing of constituencies in the 2023 delimitation exercise. This was a region where the Congress and its then ally AIUDF had registered significant wins in 2021. It will be interesting to see whether the revised electoral map also translates into changes in representation.
