US Presidential Election Results 2024 LIVE: Here's what Shashi Tharoor says on Trump presidency and India
In conversation with Manoj C G, Chief of National Political Bureau, The Indian Express, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said, "For India, of course, Trump is a known commodity. We have had four years experience with him as President. So, I don’t expect any major surprises. He is a figure with a mercurial temperament and we have to brace for occasional statements that may be uncomfortable. But, on the other hand, we have a very good chemistry between him and our Prime Minister (Narendra Modi), who was perhaps among the first world leaders to congratulate him even before he was reported to have crossed the 270 mark.
As soon as it was gauged that Trump was likely to win, Modi issued that rather fulsome tweet with a picture of him hugging Trump. That is a reminder that there is a friendship. We do remember him coming here and Modi going there… each saying ab ki baar the other one’s sarkar… That may be of some value in the relationship in the future."

US Presidential Election Results 2024 LIVE: No confidence that Trump will give right attention to climate emergency, says expert
Donald Trump's victory in the US elections has triggered mixed reactions from climate change experts. The United States under Trump in his last term, had announced its intent to exit the Paris Climate Agreement and cast doubt on global climate efforts.
Dr Gufran Beig, founder director of System of Air Quality Forecasting and Research (SAFAR)—Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune, and Chair Professor of National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bengaluru, told The Indian Express that efforts will have to be redoubled to support climate action. With Trump's return to power for a second term, his approach to climate policy is poised to impact global climate cooperation.
"It will be hard for climate scientists, considering Trump's earlier views about climate change being a hoax. It is known that the US drives the climate change agenda. Now, we need to redouble our efforts to tackle these challenges," Dr Beig said.
When contacted, Aarti Khosla, director of Climate Trends, a research-based and capacity-building initiative, told The Indian Express that Trump’s actions on climate policy last time and his decision to make US withdraw from the Paris agreement give no confidence that he will give the right attention that climate emergency requires.
"The world is different from the last time he came to power. Climate impacts have ravaged every part of the world, and climate change is much more visible as a determinant of global chaos. The COP in Baku is going to start under a very challenging political context, one in which the US will not have a mandate or political will. It may lead to further lack of progress on important elements like hiking cash for climate action, and may create more impediments than solutions on contentious matters like trade, given Trump's protectionist stance," Khosla said.

US Presidential Election Results 2024 LIVE: Policy fixes, Trump's plan to overhaul global order, Raja Mohan writes on what India needs to focus on
If President Donald Trump’s first term is any guide, India may appear well placed to deal with his second stint at the White House. But the past is not necessarily a guide to the future, and Delhi will have to take a close look at the implications of Trump’s ambitious agenda for the second term.
To be sure, there is a good rapport between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump. Modi’s key advisers will be familiar with many of the new officials who are likely to staff the senior positions in the Trump Administration. And there are many convergences between the worldview of the Modi government and the Trump team. The problem, however, comes from the radical nature of Trump’s policy framework that breaks away from the many familiar features of the global economic and political order.
Dealing with Trump’s second term is not just about finding policy fixes for the many divergences that are bound to emerge between Delhi and Washington. It demands coming to terms with Trump’s plans to overhaul the global order and the US role in it.
