The Head of Women and Gender of the Health Services Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) of Ghana, Madam Harriet Sobuor has disclosed that the Ghana Health Service has started recording cases of men who have breast cancer, including some school children through the breast screening campaign activities across the schools.

She revealed alarming breast cancer cases of over 4,000, including; women and men recorded this year.

According to her, statistics showed that several women were dying of breast cancer every year and called on the general public to pay particular attention to breast cancer detection and report to hospitals for medication as soon as possible.

“In view of this, the Health Services Workers Union has taken it upon itself not to do this education only in October but it’s an ongoing programme. But October being the pink month, we have heightened our campaign as far as breast cancer is concerned”, she stated.

Madam Sobour revealed this when the Health Services Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) of Ghana organized its 2024 breast cancer awareness creation in Cape Coast in commemoration of the October Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

She charged the general public to pay attention to themselves by going to any health service facility to request breast screening and not to wait till October.

Hajia Rahinatu Abdul-Salam, Staff of the Tamale Teaching Hospital and the National Chairperson for the Union who joined the breast Cancer awareness emphasised the importance of self-breast examination.

She mentioned that the eradication of breast cancer was a collective effort and not the Health Services Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) of Ghana alone.

Hajia Rahinatu Abdul-Salam called on government officials, Imams, pastors, traditional authorities, Municipal, Metropolitan and District Chief Executives(MMDCEs) to as a matter of urgency organize breast cancer screening in their various localities to help eliminate breast cancer in this country.

“If every MMDCE organises breast cancer screening, I think this will help us to reduce the cases dramatically” ” she said.

“We fought Guinea warm aggressively and that is what we want to do to the breast cancer. Breast cancer is killing faster than other cancer diseases so everybody should come on board to fight the disease” Hajia Rahinatu Abdul-Salam reminded.
