Ghana has issued a strong condemnation of the military takeover in Guinea-Bissau, describing the incident as an attack on democratic governance and the will of the people.

In a statement released on 26 November 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the government “strongly and unequivocally condemns the coup d’état carried out by elements of the military in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau,” adding that the action “represents a direct assault on democratic governance and disrupts the electoral process that followed the peaceful conduct of presidential and legislative elections.”

The statement expressed Ghana’s “profound concern” and “deep dissatisfaction at the brazen attempt to overturn the will of the people,” noting that the intervention “dangerously interrupted the democratic trajectory of the nation and obstructed the anticipated announcement of the election results.”

Calling for the “immediate restoration of constitutional order,” Ghana urged all actors in Guinea-Bissau to respect the democratic process and to resolve any electoral grievances through “peaceful, transparent, and legally recognised mechanisms.” I

t also demanded the protection of citizens and foreign nationals, stressing that the safety of ECOWAS Election Observation Mission officials “must be guaranteed without delay.”

Ghana further appealed to the people of Guinea-Bissau to “remain calm, exercise maximum restraint, and avoid actions that may escalate tensions.”

According to the statement, Ghana fully supports the efforts of ECOWAS and the African Union in coordinating a regional response in line with protocols on democracy, good governance, and constitutional rule.
