Ghana’s stability comes first – Afenyo-Markin calls out NDC for defying court Orders

Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has reaffirmed his party’s unwavering commitment to peace and stability in Ghana, emphasizing that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not allow anyone to destabilize the country.

Speaking to journalists following the NPP’s walkout from Parliament on Tuesday amid ongoing tensions with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Afenyo-Markin was resolute in his message: the NPP stands for peace, dialogue, and respect for the rule of law.

“Our commitment to peace remains unshaken. We have always used civil means to raise our concerns. We believe in dialogue, in the judicial process, and in using legitimate channels to resolve issues,” Afenyo-Markin asserted, drawing a clear contrast between the NPP’s approach and the actions of the NDC.

Highlighting the historical foundations of the NPP’s dedication to peaceful governance, Afenyo-Markin reminded the public of the party’s deep-rooted belief in the judicial system. “Our forefathers used the judiciary to address electoral irregularities, and because of that, today, we have better ballot boxes, better ballot papers. We didn’t take to the streets to cause chaos; we used the courts. That is what sets us apart,” he remarked, underscoring the importance of peaceful solutions in addressing national challenges.

His comments come amid rising tensions in Parliament following a contentious Supreme Court ruling. The ruling, which the NDC has expressed dissatisfaction with, led to heightened confrontations between the two political factions. Afenyo-Markin, however, was clear that respect for the judiciary is non-negotiable.

“The Supreme Court has spoken, and we expect every party to respect the rule of law. The NDC’s unwillingness to adhere to the court’s orders shows their disregard for due process. It’s dangerous when a political party chooses to defy the very institutions that uphold our democracy,” he said, expressing concern over the NDC’s stance.

For Afenyo-Markin, love for Ghana and its stability is paramount. He firmly rejected any notion that his party would compromise the peace and order of the nation. “We all want what’s best for this country. If the NDC truly has the interest of Ghanaians at heart, they must respect the decisions of our courts. They cannot pick and choose which laws to follow,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
