One dead, five in hospital after horror Nelson Bay Road crash

A WOMAN is dead after a Port Stephens crash that left several other people injured.

Police were called to Nelson Bay Road at Salamander Bay about 7.25 pm on Saturday.

Initial reports were that two vehicles had collided at the scene.

Police on Sunday confirmed the 77-year-old woman driving one of the vehicles, a Toyota Rav4, died at the scene.

Three passengers were treated at the scene before they were taken to the John Hunter Hospital by paramedics.

The 76-year-old woman and two men aged 78 and 79 were transported in a stable condition, police said.

The driver and passenger of the other vehicle, a Subaru Forrester, were also treated and taken to the same hospital.

Both the 66-year-old man and 60-year-old woman were also in stable conditions, police said.

Officers from Port Stephens Hunter Police District established a crime scene, which underwent forensic examination by Crash Investigation Unit specialists.

A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.
