'The right time': why this council CEO is headed for the exit
by Dylan Nicholson · Newcastle HeraldCentral Coast Council is in for a leadership shake-up after its chief executive officer of more than five years announced his imminent retirement.
David Farmer will retire on September 2, concluding a 45-year career in local government that has included 28 continuous years as a CEO.
During his five-and-a-half years leading Central Coast Council, Mr Farmer has overseen one of the most significant periods of organisational renewal in the council's history.
Central Coast mayor Lawrie McKinna thanked Mr Farmer for his professionalism, integrity and commitment to the Central Coast community, recognising his significant contribution to both the organisation and the Central Coast region.
"After 45 years of full time work, including 28 continuous years as a CEO across five councils, David has decided it is the right time to move into the next phase of his life," Mayor McKinna said.
"He has made an enormous contribution to the Central Coast and to local government more broadly."
"Thank you for your service. We wish you and your family all the very best for the future."
The council credited Mr Farmer with working alongside councillors and staff to help restore financial sustainability, complete the long-awaited integration of former Gosford and Wyong systems through the One Way program, and strengthen governance, progress major technology transformation, and deliver key community infrastructure.
That infrastructure has included the Norah Head Community Centre and Gosford Regional Library.
The council will consider the appointment of an acting CEO and the process for recruiting a permanent successor at an upcoming meeting.
Councillor Jared Wright said Mr Farmer's departure was an inflection point for council.
"It's important that we continue the strong momentum we have created as an organisation," he said.
"David Farmer has always been an asset to the organisation throughout his tenure and that was clear to me from the moment I was elected.
"His 45 years of experience certainly comes through and that's ultimately what has helped him bring us through administration and out the other side stronger.
"It is important that out next CEO has that financial acumen as well as that real vision for the Central Coast."
Cr Wright said this is particularly true in Gosford.
"Gosford is already going through a major revamp and revitalisation and council needs to play its part well in growing the local economy there," he said.
"This includes supporting housing and infrastructure development, while also creating an environment where businesses and events can thrive."
