Man airlifted with serious injuries after accident in national park

A man in his 40s has been seriously injured after crashing a mountain bike in a national park in the region at the weekend.

Paramedics and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter were tasked to bushland in the Yengo National Park at Upper Macdonald, southwest of Wollombi, about 11am on Saturday, September 12.

The man was found about 400 metres from the Heartbreak Hill campground having sustained serious injuries to his chest and shoulder after crashing a mountain bike, a spokesman for the NSW Ambulance said.

The man was seen by paramedics and the helicopter's critical care medical team before being extracted via a stretcher winch, the helicopter service spokesman Mick Kerry said in a statement.

He he was flown from the remote campground to John Hunter Hospital soon after. The Ambulance spokesman said his condition remained serious when he was transferred to the care of doctors at the hospital.
