Three men rescued after boat capsizes in Port Stephens
by Sage Swinton · Newcastle HeraldThree men have been rescued after a vessel capsized at Shoal Bay in Port Stephens.
Police were deployed to an area of water off Shoal Bay just after 5am on Thursday, January 1 following reports a vessel had capsized.
Marine Area Command police arrived and found three men - aged 42, 43 and 57 - who had climbed onto the hull of the capsized vessel where they notified emergency services of what happened.
Police were told the vessel had encountered large waves while trying to cross the bar off Tomaree Headland before it capsized.
The men were taken into Shoal Bay where they were treated by paramedics for mild hypothermia.
No other injuries were reported, NSW police said in a statement.
The vessel was towed from the scene, and NSW Maritime was notified of the incident.
Separately, Marine Rescue Port Stephens were called to assist a catamaran that struck rocks on the ocean side of Fingal Island late in the evening of January 1.
The rescue service said conditions were too rough to safely place a crew member aboard to assist further, so an escort was established for the catamaran to follow the rescue boat into Port Stephens, anchoring safely in Shoal Bay.
