Woolworths reveals plans for $32m supermarket redevelopment
by Dylan Nicholson · Newcastle HeraldA growing Hunter suburb is set to get a refreshed shopping centre as Woolworths looks towards a $32 million redevelopment of the local hub.
A development application has been lodged with the City of Newcastle for a major overhaul of the long-running Elermore Vale Shopping Centre on Croudace Road, with documents confirming the project would deliver a new Woolworths supermarket, specialty shops, a gym and medical suites on the site.
The application covers the 2.27-hectare site at 137 Croudace Road, which currently houses the Ritchies Supa IGA centre along with a pharmacy, medical centre, Subway outlet and butcher.
If approved, plans submitted to council show the redevelopment would create 6752 square metres of floor space.
That would include a 3876-square-metre Woolworths supermarket with a 150-square-metre click-and-collect facility, 1450 square metres of specialty retail and two levels of medical and gym space of 453 square metres each.
The plans also include 289 at-grade car spaces and almost 2900 square metres of landscaping across the site.
The site changed hands in 2023, selling for $27 million to a Sydney-based private investor
The project is estimated to cost about $32 million.
"We're excited about the opportunity to transform and modernise the local neighbourhood shopping centre in Elermore Vale," a Woolworths spokesperson said.
"The redevelopment would include new services and convenient shopping options, and we believe our plans will contribute positively to the Greater Newcastle region by creating a vibrant place for small business and the community to enjoy.
"We lodged our development application in May and will continue to keep local residents updated on our progress."
The application remains before council, with Elermore Vale residents able to view the plans and supporting reports through the council's online application tracking system.
