Volunteers celebrated

About 50 Cancer Society Daffodil Day volunteers from around Central Otago were celebrated at an afternoon tea in Alexandra to thank them for their efforts.

Hosted by Cancer Society navigator Shona Bain and community manager Tara Strahan, the Volunteer Week event recognised the huge contribution made to raise money for the Cancer Society’s work.

Ms Strahan said last year more than 500 volunteers across the Central Otago area helped pull together Daffodil Day.

Some of those celebrating in Alexandra had been volunteering for 10 to 20 years, she said.

For 36 years daffodils had been sold by volunteers around the country as spring begins and the flowers bloom.

The Cancer Society used the money raised to offer free support for people with cancer and their whānau, fund cancer research and deliver health promotion activities to reduce the risk of cancer for future generations, she said.
