Maui County will begin using four new, all-electric transit buses on the Valley Isle starting Monday.

Maui County officials say four new, all-electric transit buses will be hitting Valley Isle roads on Monday.

Some will be out for driver training, while others will be offering Maui Bus passenger service, according to the county Department of Transportation.

“These zero-emission buses represent a major milepost in the County of Maui’s efforts to reduce local air pollution and modernize the Maui Bus fleet with quieter, cleaner technology,” Transportation Director Marc Takamori said in a news release. “Our new buses help drive a more sustainable future for transportation not just on Maui, but across the entire state of Hawaii.”

The new electric buses will initially be part of the Maui Bus Kahului Loop No. 5 and the Upcountry Islander NO. 40 routes, and will eventually expand to other routes.

The buses were manufactured by Gillig LLC and made possible through a partnership with the state Department of Transportation and funds from the Federal Transit Administration, the Hawaii State Energy Office and the county, officials said.
