High surf in effect for Hawaii’s northern and western shores

The radar indicates high surf along the northern and western shores of the Hawaiian Islands.
A high surf warning is in effect until noon on Monday for the north- and west-facing shores of Oahu, Kauai, Molokai and Niihau as well as the north-facing shores of Maui.
Meanwhile, a high surf warning is in effect until noon on Monday for the west-facing shores of Hawaii island.
“An extra large, long-period, west northwest (300-320 degree) swell will peak this morning and maintain warning level surf along north and west facing shores through Monday morning. Surf may drop down to advisory levels by Monday afternoon,” according to the forecast.
Dangerously large breaking waves of 35 to 45 feet are predicted along the north-facing shores of Oahu, Kauai, Molokai and Niihau, while surf of 20 to 30 feet are expected along the west-facing shores of Oahu, Kauai, Molokai and Niihau, and north-facing shores of Maui.
Dangerously large breaking waves between 12 and 20 feet are predicted along the exposed west-facing shores of Hawaii island until noon Monday.
Forecasters urge the public to stay away from the shoreline of affected coasts and be prepared for road closures.

“Powerful longshore and rip currents will be present at most beaches. Large breaking waves and strong currents may impact harbor entrances and channels causing challenging boat handling,” forecasters said.
