Wahiawa man gets 20 years in prison for sexual assault of foster kids
by Leila Fujimori · Star-AdvertiserA 33-year-old Wahiawa man was sentenced in Circuit Court Wednesday to 20 years in prison for the sexual assault of two foster children under the age of 14 that took place over several years in the home of his mother and with her knowledge.
Bryson Joshua Mahoe pleaded guilty on Sept. 30 to two counts of continuous sexual assault of minors, a Class A felony, and one count of third-degree promotion of child abuse.
“These crimes represent a profound violation of trust and cause lifelong harm to children,” Honolulu Prosecutor Steve Alm said in a news release today. “These children showed remarkable bravery in reporting the incident and working with law enforcement and our office to hold the defendant accountable.”
Mahoe had entered into a plea deal with prosecutors that included a 20-year prison term and the dismissal of two counts of first-degree promotion of child abuse.
On July 30, a Circuit Court jury in Honolulu found his 55-year-old mother, Dorothy Mahoe, guilty of four counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor and four counts of persistent nonsupport.
The evidence showed Dorothy Mahoe physically abused and neglected all four siblings, including leaving them locked in a room for extended periods without food or water, the Honolulu Prosecutor’s Office said in the release. She was also aware that her son committed sexual assaults and did nothing to protect the children, it said.
