High surf advisory covers most Hawaiian north, west shores
by Star-Advertiser Staff · Star-AdvertiserThe National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high surf advisory for north and west shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu and Molokai, and for the north shores of Maui, through 8 a.m. Friday.
Large waves between 15 to 20 feet are expected on the north shores and 10 to 12 feet in height on west shores, forecasters said.
“A quick-hitting reinforcing northwest swell will arrive early Friday morning and this will help maintain advisory level surf through Friday morning,” they said.
North and west-facing shore surf should significantly drop by Friday afternoon and evening, forecasters say.
“Strong breaking waves and strong currents will make swimming dangerous,” the advisory warns.
The advisory had been in effect until noon but NWS forecasters revised the expiration time to 8 a.m. earlier Friday.
