The 31-year-old Maui man wanted in connection with a fatal crash in Pukalani last week has been arrested.

Maui Police Department officials said Kaleo Kubo was “taken into custody without incident” on Monday.

Kubo had been wanted since a Wednesday head-on crash sent 19-year-old Mason Pang, of Makawao, to the hospital in critical condition. On Friday, MPD announced that Pang had died from his injuries.

According to police, at about 12:14 a.m. Wednesday, Pang was driving a 1998 Toyota Tacoma east on Haleakala Highway in Pukalani when a black 2020 Honda Ridgeline made a left turn from Old Haleakala Highway to head west on Haleakala Highway and crashed into the Toyota.

The driver of the Honda, identified as Kubo, fled on foot, MPD said. The passenger of the Honda, a 32-year-old Wailuku woman, sustained multiple injuries and was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, police said.

MPD had issued alerts asking for the public’s help locating Kubo who was wanted for both the crash and a no-bail warrant.

Police said investigators found that the airbags of both vehicles deployed in the crash and the Toyota driver was wearing a seat belt while the Honda passenger was not. It was unknown if speed, alcohol, or drugs were factors in the crash, according to MPD.

This was Maui County’s 18th traffic fatality for 2025, compared with 14 at the same time last year.
