A 19-year-old man who was critically injured in a vehicle crash early Wednesday has died, Maui police said today.
Mason Pang, of Makawao, was driving a 1998 Toyota Tacoma east on Haleakala Highway in Pukalani at about 12:14 a.m. Wednesday when a black 2020 Honda Ridgeline made a left turn from Old Haleakala Highway to head west on Haleakala Highway and crashed head-on into the Toyota.
Pang sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken in critical condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he died around noon Thursday, according to the Maui Police Department.
The driver of the Honda, identified as 31-year-old Kaleo Kubo, fled on foot, police said. The passenger of the Honda, a 32-year-old Wailuku woman, sustained multiple injuries and was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, MPD said.
Kubo, who is known to frequent central Maui, was still at large this afternoon and is wanted for both Wednesday’s crash and a no-bail warrant, police said. He was described as 5 feet, 3 inches, 155 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.
Anyone with information regarding Kubo’s whereabouts is asked to call MPD at (808) 244-6400 or 911, if it is an emergency, and refer to MPD report number 25-035719.

Police said investigators found that the airbags of both vehicles deployed in the crash and the Toyota driver was wearing a seat belt while the Honda passenger was not. It is unknown if speed, alcohol, or drugs were factors in the crash, according to MPD.
This was Maui County’s 18th traffic fatality for 2025, compared with 14 at the same time last year.
