Massachusetts’ highest court has intervened in a dispute over religious statues at a public building, ruling that a mayor cannot install two towering Catholic saints outside the city’s new public safety headquarters.

The mayor spent $850,000 on the statues without telling the public or the city council. The 10-foot bronze saints were meant to guard the entrance of a $175 million building paid for by everyone.
