Maurene Comey said she was given no reason for her July 2025 firing from the Manhattan federal prosecutor’s office. On Oct. 26, a judge ruled that the Trump administration had removed her unlawfully.

Comey sued the administration in September, alleging that she’d lost her job because of President Donald Trump’s long-running conflict with her father, former FBI director James Comey. Her lawsuit argued that the firing violated protections against politically motivated dismissals of civil servants and her right to due process in an employment dispute.

A Harvard Law School graduate, she’d spent years prosecuting federal cases in Manhattan. Her cases included the prosecutions of Ghislaine Maxwell, Jeffrey Epstein’s associate, and Sean “Diddy” Combs.

Trump fired James Comey during his first term and attacked him over his role in the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, which Trump won.

James Comey also faced a 2024 Justice Department case accusing him of lying to Congress about authorizing media leaks. He pleaded not guilty.

A judge dismissed that case after finding that the U.S. attorney who obtained the charges hadn’t been lawfully appointed. He’s since pleaded not guilty in a separate federal case accusing him of threatening Trump.
