During World War II, an 18-year-old faced hours of Nazi torture and refused to surrender the one thing they demanded most — her name.

Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya was that young woman. Captured and interrogated, she endured hours of brutality without giving her captors what they wanted.

They came at her with a leather belt, lit matches, and a saw against her back, and marched her barefoot through the snow.

She gave them one word: “Tanya.”
