DFA welcomes US-Iran peace deal

by · BusinessWorld Online

Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Wednesday welcomed the peace deal between the United States and Iran, hoping that the agreement will lead to the end of the war altogether.

“The Philippines welcomes the ‘peace deal’ reached between the US and Iran following mediation efforts by Pakistan and other regional actors,” the DFA said in a statement sent to reporters via WhatsApp.

The DFA said that the war has caused disruptions in the global economy and damage to civilian infrastructure.

US President Donald J. Trump on Monday said that they have reached an initial agreement with Iran but has yet to disclose the conditions of the deal, Reuters reported.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on June 16 said a final agreement has yet to be formed but noted that the preliminary deal is a crucial step towards ending the war.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has prepared itself for all options, and the government’s focus — with or without an agreement — is sincere service to the people,” Mr. Pezeshkian wrote in a social media post on X.

The war, triggered by the US and Israel’s joint strikes on Iran in February, drove oil prices up in the Philippines, prompting the government to declare a state of national energy emergency.

Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin on Monday said the national energy emergency may also last for another two to three months but noted that the fuel prices will stabilize.

The Philippines has 46.37 days in oil supply as of June 12, according to the Department of Energy. — Kaela Patricia B. Gabriel
