The country's official position is that foreign nationals may apply for registration as Zimbabwean citizens only after completing a decade of legal, ordinary residence within the country's borders.

The requirement applies to any non-citizen seeking to formalise their status as a Zimbabwean national.

How to Apply for Zimbabwean Citizenship

Beyond the 10-year residency requirement, the process comes with additional conditions.

All applicants must be ordinarily resident in Zimbabwe at the time they submit their application, meaning they cannot apply from abroad.

The application must also be made in person, directly at the offices of the Registrar General of Citizenship Zimbabwe, with no provision for remote or third-party submission.

The Zimbabwean government has not outlined any fast-track or alternative route to citizenship for foreign nationals outside of this residency-based pathway, making the decade-long requirement the standard threshold for eligibility.
