Denmark Announces 1 Category Barred From Getting Permanent Residence Permit
by Muhammed Hammed Olayinka, https://www.facebook.com/legitngnews · Legit.ng News · Join- Denmark's government website has outlined a specific category of foreigners who can never qualify for a permanent residence permit in the country
- The Danish government's position on this group of applicants is clearly stated in its official policy on permanent residency requirements
- The restriction applies regardless of how long the individual has lived in Denmark or how many other conditions they meet
Denmark has drawn a firm line on who can never qualify for permanent residency, naming one category of foreign nationals as permanently ineligible under its immigration rules.
The Danish government's official website sets out the conditions that foreign nationals must meet to apply for a permanent residence permit. Among those conditions is a disqualifying criterion that applies without exception and cannot be overcome through time or circumstance.
Denmark's permanent ban on residency applications
According to the Danish government, any foreigner who has received a prison sentence exceeding six months is permanently barred from obtaining a permanent residence permit in the country. The policy leaves no room for appeals based on rehabilitation or the passage of time.
The government's website states the rule directly:
"However, if you have been sentenced to more than six months of incarceration, you are permanently ineligible for a permanent residence permit."
The use of the word "permanently" in the official text is significant. Unlike other disqualifying factors in many countries' immigration systems, which can be overridden after a certain number of years or under particular circumstances, Denmark's stance on this specific issue is absolute.
What this means for foreign nationals in Denmark
For the broader population of foreign nationals living or planning to live in Denmark, the rule underscores the importance of understanding the country's immigration requirements in full before applying. A permanent residence permit in Denmark typically allows holders to live and work in the country without time restrictions, making it a significant milestone for long-term residents.
The disqualification based on a custodial sentence of more than six months means that even individuals who have otherwise satisfied all remaining criteria, including years of residency, language proficiency, and financial self-sufficiency, would still be turned away on this ground alone.
Denmark sets income requirement for permanent residence
Meanwhile, Legit.ng recently reported that Denmark set a minimum average annual income foreigners must meet to qualify for permanent residence under its 2026 rules.
Applicants using the income route must show they earned at least DKK 346,155.57 on average over the two years before a decision is made on their application.
