President Emmerson Mnangagwa has warned Zanu-PF members against “indiscipline, opportunism and ideological indecisiveness” amid raging factionalism threatening to dismantle the party.

Speaking at the 21st National ZANU PF People’s Conference in Bulawayo, Mnangagwa emphasised unity and ideological clarity. Mnangagwa described Zanu-PF as “a moving train, welcoming new members while safeguarding against divisive elements.”

Mnangagwa’s address highlighted the importance of party cohesion, quoting Shona proverbs: “Zanu-PF musangano unoyera” (Zanu-PF is a sacred party) and “MuZanu-PF tine tsika, yekukudzana nekuremekedzana” (In Zanu-PF, we have respect and unity).

This comes at a time when the rift between Mnangagwa and his deputy Constantino Chiwenga over succession plans is reportedly escalating.

Mnangagwa is believed to be hatching a plan to extend his term of office beyond the stipulated two-term limit.

He is supposed to retire in 2028. But the President is allegedly behind calls by a Zanu-PF camp calling for the amendment of the Constitution to allow him to remain in office until 2030.

During the conference, two provinces; Midlands Province and Masvingo Province, chanted the controversial “ED2030” slogan calling for Mnangagwa’s extended his rule.

Additionally, Mnangagwa’s faction is reportedly planning to remove Chiwenga from his position, replacing him with Senate President Mabel Chinomona.

Chiwenga is fiercely opposed to this. He recently told Zanu-PF supporters not to personalise the party.

Last week, Chiwenga’s supporters moving under an organisation called, the General Chiwenga Voluntary Supporters Association (GCVSA) condemned remarks by Zanu-PF Deputy Youth Affairs Secretary John Paradza which supported the 2030 idea.

GCVSA, representing ZIPRA veterans, women and youth from Matabeleland, accused Paradza of undermining democratic principles and attacking Chiwenga’s legitimacy.

GCVSA praised Chiwenga’s leadership, military background and dedication to Zimbabweans. They vowed unwavering support, labeling Paradza’s faction “desperate” and “undemocratic.” The association sees Chiwenga as the people’s choice, committed to prosperity.

The GCVSA had also planned a massive Bulawayo demonstration to showcase support for Chiwenga and counter Paradza’s faction during the ongoing conference.
