‘American Idol’ Contestant Sentenced to Life Without Parole for Murder of Wife
· Rolling StoneThe former American Idol contestant and church worship leader convicted of murdering his wife and staging the scene to look like a burglary was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Monday.
Caleb Flynn, 40, was convicted last week after jurors needed only two-and-a-half hours to agree he shot his wife, Ashley Flynn, twice in the back of her head while she slept in their home in a suburb of Dayton with their daughters asleep nearby. During the two-week trial, the jury heard text messages in which Flynn told his mistress that he hated his wife and wanted her dead.
“Your actions, Mr. Flynn, were abhorrent. The layers of deceit, manipulation, and cruelty that you have shown are quite honestly impossible to fathom,” Miami County Common Pleas Court Judge Jeannine N. Pratt said Monday as she handed down the punishment, finding that Flynn showed no remorse and posed an “extreme risk” to the public. “You used your faith to manipulate the lives of others, and the court finds that deeply disturbing.”
Addressing the court before he was sentenced, Flynn cried, quoted scripture, and claimed that he was wrongly accused, according to a livestream from Court TV. Flynn said he was ashamed of what he said about Ashley in his texts, but he was adamant he still loved her and didn’t kill her.
“As I stand here before God, my ultimate judge, I am not lying when I say I did not kill my wife,” Flynn claimed, wearing an orange jail uniform, tears streaming down his cheeks. “I will continue to fight for my innocence. I did not kill my wife.”
He broke down sobbing when relatives read letters from his daughters. One said she did not plan on visiting him in prison. “I love you deeply with all my heart, and it’s sad you can’t love anyone but yourself,” the daughter wrote in her letter.
“Mommy was the perfect person, the absolute perfect person,” the other daughter wrote. “What did she ever do to make you hate her so much? She loved you and she cared for you. … She was my best friend, and then you chose to kill the only mother I ever had.”

Ashley’s father, Todd Smith, told the court he forgave Flynn but that he wanted the court to issue the harshest sentence available under the law. “We will not let anger or bitterness consume the wonderful memory of Ashley,” he said.
Flynn did not testify in his own defense at trial. His lawyers argued that an intruder entered the house and killed his wife on Feb. 16. But investigators found no third-party DNA at the scene and said damage to a garage side door, which was found open that night, appeared to have been made with multiple tools rather than in a single act of forced entry. Prosecutors said Flynn shot his wife as she lay in bed asleep, that his devices showed he was moving around the hours when he claimed he was asleep, and that Flynn tried to coach their daughters about what to say.
The bullets used in the murder were 9-millimeter rounds, but the murder weapon was never found. Prosecutors said Flynn kept a 9-millimeter handgun in the center console of his truck, which was found open and empty when police arrived at the scene.
“If I could literally kill her and not go to hell, I would do it in a heartbeat. That is how dark and how hateful I feel,” Flynn wrote to his mistress, Alleigha Botner, in May 2025, prosecutors said.
Three months later, in August, he wrote: “All I want is you. I’m sorry I’ve hurt you. I was up until 4 a.m. last night crying, literally thinking of ways to kill her and not go to jail.” In another message, he added, “I hate every second of this life I have to live.” Prosecutors said the messages were among more than 100,000 that Flynn exchanged with Botner in the year before Ashley’s death.

In a “Road to Hollywood” interview posted by American Idol on YouTube, Flynn said he had auditioned because he loved to sing. “Maybe my wife kinda nudged me a little bit too,” he added, referring to Ashley.
He mentioned Ashley twice more during the two-minute video, at one point saying he loved her “more than anything.” Flynn also described himself as eager to learn from the judges and determined to succeed. “When I want something,” he said, “I’m gonna go after it.”
