When Tim Ayres moved to Sydney from the NSW Riverina as a young man, he settled in the working-class, inner-west suburb of Camperdown. There he struck up a close friendship with another young Labor-Left activist and second-term federal MP named Anthony Albanese.
“Anthony was one of the first people that I met in politics,” Ayres says. “I was in his mum’s Labor Party branch.”
