On November 20th, the State Police received information about possible sexual abuse of a minor in Engure. The suspect was detained the next day and remains in custody.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated in connection with the incident under Section 160, Part 4 of the Criminal Law, namely for sexual violence committed against a person who has not reached the age of 16. Such a crime is punishable by imprisonment for a period of 5 to 15 years.

The school's principal, Jānis Pūce, said that the parents of the pupil involved had reported the incident to the police. Neither the principal nor the police would provide further comments or details of the incident.

"A parent wrote a report to the State Police. One specific child," the principal said. He noted that he has been running the school for a year and a half, and during his tenure there have been no other signs of sexual abuse against minors at the school.

The school principal said the victim is currently receiving professional support.
