The stage is all decked up in Guwahati for Himanta Biswa Sarma to take oath as Assam chief minister for a second consecutive term today, following the BJP-led NDA’s decisive victory in the 2026 Assembly elections. Alongside Sarma, four ministers and the Speaker will also be sworn in. This comes after the NDA retained power for a third straight term, winning 102 seats in the 126-member House.
TEAM HIMANTA SARMA
Ajanta Neog
A senior BJP leader and one of Sarma’s closest political associates, Ajanta Neog will continue as a key face in the new cabinet. She won the Golaghat seat for the sixth consecutive time and remains the state’s longest-serving woman legislator.
First elected in 2001 as a Congress MLA, Neog later joined the BJP in 2020. In the outgoing government, she served as Assam’s first woman finance minister and also handled women and child development.
Rameswar Teli
Rameswar Teli returns to state politics after a decade in Parliament. A prominent leader from the tea garden community, he won from Duliajan, a constituency he had earlier represented between 2001 and 2011.
Teli served as a Lok Sabha MP from Dibrugarh from 2014 to 2024 and was later nominated to the Rajya Sabha. At the Centre, he held portfolios including petroleum and natural gas, labour and employment, and food processing industries.
Atul Bora
Atul Bora, president of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), continues as one of the NDA’s principal alliance partners in Assam. He retained the Bokakhat constituency in the latest election and has represented the seat since 2016.
A veteran of the Assam student movement, Bora entered politics through the AGP and previously served as MLA from Golaghat. He held the agriculture portfolio in the outgoing government and has been a minister in both previous BJP-led administrations in the state.
Charan Boro
Charan Boro represents the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) in the new ministry. Elected from Majbat for the third time, he served as transport minister in the outgoing cabinet.
Boro joined the Sarma government last year as part of the BJP’s alliance understanding with the BPF ahead of the polls. His inclusion underlines the NDA’s continued coalition arrangement in the Bodoland region, a crucial electoral bloc in Assam.
Ranjit Dass
Ranjit Dass, BJP MLA from Bhawanipur-Sorbhog (Bajali) seat, has been chosen as the NDA’s candidate for Speaker of the Assam Assembly. His appointment is expected to be formalised when the newly elected House convenes.
A senior party figure, Dass’s selection indicates the BJP’s effort to ensure experienced leadership in the Assembly as the alliance begins its third consecutive term.
GRAND SWEARING-IN CEREMONY
The ceremony will take place at the Veterinary Field in Khanapara, Guwahati, where Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya will administer the oath of office and secrecy.
Officials expect over one lakh attendees, including BJP panchayat members and supporters from across the state.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union ministers including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and Nirmala Sitharaman, along with chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from NDA-ruled states, are expected to attend. Security has been tightened across Guwahati for the event.
The oath-taking marks the formal beginning of the NDA’s third successive government in Assam and Sarma’s second consecutive tenure as chief minister.
