A mother's quick thinking and courage foiled a knife-point robbery attempt near the Khalsa Don Bosco area in Mumbai's Matunga area after she confronted an armed man who allegedly entered her car while her two children were seated inside.

The incident took place around 7 pm on Thursday when the woman had arrived to pick up her children from a football class. As she unlocked her car and sat in the driver's seat, the accused allegedly opened the rear door and entered the vehicle, where her children were seated.

According to police, the accused, identified as Ali Basharat Ali Sayyad (40), pulled out a knife and threatened the children before demanding money and gold jewellery from the woman. He also allegedly warned her against raising an alarm.

However, the woman refused to comply and began screaming while confronting the accused. Her resistance reportedly unsettled the man, who got out of the car and tried to escape.

Hearing the commotion, passers-by chased and caught the accused before handing him over to the police. Officers later recovered two knives from his possession.

Police registered a case for attempted robbery and wrongful restraint against Sayyad.

He has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 126(2) for wrongful restraint and Sections 309(2) and 309(5) related to robbery and attempt to commit robbery.

Further investigation into the matter is underway.
