Former Olympian and Jalandhar Cantt MLA Pargat Singh has been appointed the new president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), replacing Amarinder Singh Raja Warring.

The appointment comes ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections and follows Warring’s resignation as state Congress chief on October 2. Pargat Singh was among the names being considered by the Congress high command for the post.

A former Indian hockey captain and Olympian, Pargat Singh has held key responsibilities in the Punjab government, including serving as Sports and Education Minister. He currently represents the Jalandhar Cantt Assembly constituency.

The change in leadership comes as the Punjab Congress begins preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections. The party is expected to focus on strengthening its organisation and preparing its electoral strategy under the new state president.

Pargat Singh’s appointment brings an experienced political and sporting figure to the leadership of the state unit. His tenure will now coincide with the Congress’ preparations for the next Assembly polls, with the party seeking to build its organisation and campaign ahead of the election.
