The weather department said wind speeds were expected to reach 60-80 kmph across parts of Delhi and adjoining areas. At 2:30 pm, the Safdarjung observatory reported strong gusts, while Palam recorded winds of up to 50 knots, or about 92 kmph.
Dark clouds and dust engulfed several parts of the city, reducing visibility and causing disruption to normal life. Videos shared on social media showed strong winds sweeping through roads and residential areas as people rushed indoors.
The IMD warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, moderate to intense rainfall and strong gusty winds over Delhi-NCR during the next few hours. It advised residents to avoid open spaces, stay away from trees and weak structures, and remain indoors wherever possible.
The Red Alert indicates the likelihood of severe weather conditions that could impact transport, power infrastructure and outdoor activities. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as the storm system moves across the region.
