Andhra Pradesh has reported four COVID-19-related deaths and 12 infections since June 26, prompting health authorities to reiterate that cases remain sporadic and are not linked to any cluster.
The Andhra Pradesh Health Department on Thursday said four people with underlying health conditions have died after contracting COVID-19 between June 26 and July 16. Health Commissioner G Veerapandian said a total of 12 infections were recorded during the period, marking the state's first reported COVID-19 cases of 2026.
According to the commissioner, all four patients who died had severe comorbidities, including hypertension, diabetes, renal ailments and other serious illnesses. Of the four fatalities, three were reported from Kadapa district and one from Kakinada.
The state's first COVID-19 case this year was detected in Kadapa on June 26. Between July 1 and July 16, 11 additional infections were reported, taking the total to 12.
Kadapa accounted for the highest number of cases with eight infections, followed by Guntur with two cases, while Visakhapatnam and Kakinada reported one case each. Health officials said the infections were reported from different mandals and did not constitute a cluster outbreak.
The department also said two patients contracted the infection after coming into close contact with infected individuals.
As part of surveillance, 67 COVID-19 tests were conducted in Andhra Pradesh between June 26 and July 15. Eleven positive cases were detected within the state, while the 12th infection was identified at Christian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore, Tamil Nadu.
Among the infected patients, three are in home isolation, two are undergoing treatment in hospitals, and three have recovered and been discharged, according to the Health Department.
Meanwhile, Kadapa has set up a dedicated Covid ward at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Hospital as a precautionary measure. Local health officials said seven positive cases have so far been reported in the district, while Visakhapatnam currently has one patient in home isolation.
Providing a national overview, the Health Commissioner said 339 COVID-19 cases were reported across India from July 1 onwards. Kerala recorded the highest number of infections with 115 cases, followed by Karnataka (64), Maharashtra (43), Tamil Nadu (39), Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Delhi (18 each), Rajasthan (12), with a smaller number of cases reported from other states.
While most COVID-19 infections continue to be mild, certain sections of the population remain at greater risk of developing severe disease. These include the elderly, pregnant women, individuals with underlying conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular and respiratory illnesses, and people with compromised immune systems, who are more susceptible to serious complications.
