Murmu hails Indian diaspora in Romania as true representatives of India

President Droupadi Murmu praised the Indian diaspora during her Romania state visit. Her remarks underlined the community's role in deepening India-Romania ties and future cooperation.

President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday praised the Indian community in Romania, calling them “true representatives of India” whose achievements strengthen India’s ties with countries across the world. Addressing a reception for the Indian diaspora, she said the close bond between the people of India and Romania is the strongest pillar of bilateral relations.

Murmu said cooperation between India and Romania is now broader and more dynamic than ever, with both governments working closely on major global issues such as sustainable development, climate change, counter-terrorism and the promotion of a rules-based, peaceful international order. She also described the conclusion of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement in January this year as a historic milestone and said its early implementation would significantly expand business ties with EU member states, including Romania.

Speaking to members of the Indian community, the President said she was happy to see that the diaspora remained united and had kept India’s rich cultural heritage alive in Romania. “Your contribution to Romania’s economy and society, and your efforts to promote Indian culture and values here, make you true representatives of India,” she said. Appreciating the diaspora, she added that even though they live far away from India, they remain deeply connected to their motherland. “Your achievements and your love for India make every Indian proud,” she said.

Murmu hailed the contribution of Indian companies and professionals to the Romanian economy, saying a new generation of Indian IT engineers, scholars, researchers, healthcare professionals and students is now making Romania their home. “I am pleased to see that Indian companies and Indian professionals are making significant contributions to Romania’s development while also creating new opportunities for cooperation between our two countries,” she said. She said there was considerable scope for expanding economic cooperation in sectors such as defence, renewable energy, digital technology, education, research and healthcare.

Referring to the presence of Romanian “Friends of India” at the event, Murmu said their love for Indian art and culture, along with their spiritual connections with India, formed an important bridge between the people of the two countries. She noted that Romania has given the world many outstanding artists, musicians, writers and philosophers. “India has always cherished diversity, dialogue and the pursuit of knowledge. It is heartening to see Yoga, Ayurveda, Indian dance, music, cinema and cuisine gaining popularity in Romania,” she said. Murmu also said India was moving forward with renewed confidence and firm determination and remained among the world’s fastest-growing major economies. “Our vision of ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ is to build a prosperous, modern, self-reliant and inclusive India,” she said.

Murmu, who arrived in Romania on Thursday on a state visit, the first by an Indian head of state to the country in over three decades, urged the diaspora to remain active partners in India’s development journey. “Wherever you may live in the world, your experience, expertise and achievements contribute to India’s progress and further strengthen our ties with countries across the globe,” she said. She said the Indian government would always remain committed to the welfare of the diaspora and added, “Let us continue to work together to build an even stronger India-Romania partnership founded on trust, shared prosperity and enduring friendship.”
