NMC approves 275 more MBBS seats in Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Jammu and Kashmir
The approvals will add 275 MBBS seats across 4 government medical colleges - 100 at Piduguralla, 75 at Siddhartha Government Medical College in Vijayawada, 50 at Goa Medical College and 50 at Government Medical College Jammu - from the 2026-27 academic year.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved an increase in MBBS seats for several government medical colleges across Andhra Pradesh, Goa and Jammu, expanding undergraduate medical education capacity from the 2026-27 academic year.
In Andhra Pradesh, Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav on Monday said PTI, the NMC has approved 175 additional MBBS seats for two government medical colleges in the state. The council has sanctioned 100 MBBS seats for Piduguralla Government Medical College and 75 seats for Siddhartha Government Medical College in Vijayawada, Yadav said in a release.
Recently, the NMC had also allocated 75 additional seats to Kadapa Government Medical College and 25 more seats to Nellore Government Medical College. According to the release, the NMC has approved 275 additional MBBS seats for Andhra Pradesh in the 2026-27 academic year alone and a total of 455 seats over the last three years.
GMC GOA GETS 50 MBBS SEATS
Meanwhile, in Goa, the NMC has approved an increase of 50 MBBS seats at Goa Medical College (GMC), taking the annual intake from 200 to 250 students from the academic year 2026-27.
In a post on X, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant described the approval as a significant boost to medical education in the state, saying the enhanced intake would create greater opportunities for aspiring medical students.
"The National Medical Commission has approved an increase of 50 MBBS seats at Goa Medical College, raising the total intake from 200 to 250 seats from the academic year 2026-27. The expansion will further strengthen Goa's medical education ecosystem and augment the state's healthcare human resources," he said.
Sawant expressed gratitude to the NMC for its continued support in strengthening medical education and healthcare infrastructure in Goa.
State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane termed the approval "a proud milestone for Goa" and said the NMC had issued the Letter of Permission in this regard.
"Guided by the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to expand quality medical education and build a stronger healthcare ecosystem, this will create more opportunities for aspiring doctors and further strengthen healthcare in Goa," Rane said in his post on X.
He thanked Union Health Minister J P Nadda for his support and guidance in securing the approval.
Goa Medical College, the state's premier government medical institution, currently admits 200 MBBS students annually. With the latest approval from the NMC, it will admit 250 students from the 2026-27 academic session.
MORE MBBS SEATS IN JAMMU AND KASHMIR
In Jammu and Kashmir, the NMC has granted permission to increase the annual MBBS intake at Government Medical College Jammu by 50 seats, an official spokesperson said on Monday.
The announcement was made by the Health and Medical Education Department.
The Medical Assessment and Rating Board of the NMC has issued the Letter of Permission approving an additional 50 MBBS seats for the college, the spokesperson said.
With this approval, the total annual intake capacity at Government Medical College Jammu will rise from the existing 200 seats to 250 seats, effective from the upcoming academic year 2026-27, he added.
Last week, the NMC had also approved an additional 50 MBBS seats for Government Medical College Srinagar, raising the total intake there to 250.
On the allocation of additional seats in these medical colleges, the Health and Medical Education Department said the expansion reflects the government's steadfast commitment to upgrading medical infrastructure, improving human resource capacity, and providing greater opportunities for local youth to pursue medical careers within the region.
