  • Suspensions follow alleged misconduct during college annual fest
  • Students barred from campus except for exams, suspensions interim

A major controversy has erupted at Hansraj College after the suspension of around 30 students, including four elected student union office-bearers, over alleged misconduct linked to the college’s annual fest.

The action has triggered a sharp political and academic debate, with student leaders calling it an attack on campus democracy while the administration cites discipline and institutional order.

The suspensions, issued between April 20 and April 25, have become one of the most discussed developments in University of Delhi student politics this year.

WHAT ACTION HAS HANSRAJ COLLEGE TAKEN AGAINST STUDENTS?

According to official notices, Hansraj College has suspended nearly 30 students, including four elected representatives of the Hansraj College Students’ Union for the 2025–26 term.

The suspended students have been barred from entering the college campus during the suspension period, except for appearing in examinations and internal assessments. The orders have been described as interim suspensions, meaning they will remain in effect until further directions or completion of disciplinary proceedings.

WHY WERE THE STUDENTS SUSPENDED?

The college administration cited multiple allegations against the students, including:

  • Defaming the institution through social media platforms
  • Using derogatory language against teaching and non-teaching staff
  • Acts of indiscipline
  • Physical violence during the annual fest
  • Disruption of campus order

The disciplinary action comes after incidents reportedly linked to the annual college fest held on April 8 and April 9.

WHAT DO THE OFFICIAL NOTICES SAY?

The first suspension notice, issued on April 20, targeted one student and mentioned misconduct such as defamation of the institution and offensive language.

A second notice later named 14 students for alleged indiscipline, physical violence, and disturbance during the fest. Additional notices followed, eventually taking the total number of suspended students to around 30.

One notice dated April 25 confirmed that four student union office-bearers were suspended with immediate effect, pending disciplinary proceedings.

HOW HAVE STUDENT LEADERS REACTED?

The move has sparked outrage from the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU), which strongly criticised the administration’s decision.

DUSU President Aryaman Sai described the suspensions as a “brazen attack on student democracy” and accused the administration of misusing power.

"Campuses are meant for dissent, dialogue, and accountability, not authoritarian crackdowns. Students will not be bullied. Students will not be silenced," Aryaman Sai told ANI.

He questioned whether the elected representatives were being punished for raising student issues and exposing administrative shortcomings. He further alleged that the action was aimed at weakening student leadership and suppressing dissent on campus.

WHY IS THIS ISSUE IMPORTANT FOR DELHI UNIVERSITY STUDENTS?

The controversy extends far beyond a single college campus and highlights larger issues facing universities today.

It raises important questions about freedom of expression on campuses, the limits of student protests, the role and relevance of elected student unions, and the need for administrative accountability.

At the same time, it brings attention to the challenge of maintaining discipline while protecting democratic participation and student voices.

As Hansraj College is considered one of the most prominent institutions at the University of Delhi, developments there often have a wider impact on student politics and policy discussions across the university.

Since the suspensions are interim in nature, further disciplinary hearings or internal inquiries may determine whether the action is revoked, modified, or made permanent. Students and campus groups are likely to continue demanding transparency and due process.

The college principal, Professor (Dr) Rama, could not be reached for comment at the time of reporting.

IS THIS A DISCIPLINARY MOVE OR A CAMPUS DEMOCRACY FLASHPOINT?

The Hansraj College suspension row has quickly become a flashpoint in Delhi University politics. While the administration insists the action is necessary to maintain discipline after fest-related misconduct, student leaders see it as an attempt to silence elected voices.

As the matter unfolds, the case is expected to shape future debates on student rights, campus governance, and freedom of dissent in Indian universities.
