At least one teacher was killed and four other people injured by a student who opened fire at a school in Thailand on Friday before killing himself, authorities said.
Lieutenant Colonel Dechrapee Kongdee, commander of the Nonthaburi Provincial Police, confirmed the casualties to Reuters and said the suspected gunman died by suicide after the attack. Among the four injured were a teacher and three students, he added.
The shooting took place in the Nonthaburi province, north of Bangkok. Police identified the attacker as a student but did not immediately provide further details.
Visuals from the school showed emergency responders rushing to the scene as students were evacuated from the campus. Ambulances ferried the injured while rescue personnel attended to victims, with one person seen lying on a stretcher outside an ambulance being attended to by a medic.
An 18-year-old student told Reuters that he initially mistook the sound for bursting firecrackers or someone hitting an object.
"I didn't think it was a gun at first," he said, "There were many shots: bang bang bang. Then it went quiet. Then it started again."
Officials said that the death toll could rise as some of the injured were receiving medical treatment. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
According to district authorities, the school had an enrollment of about 3,100 students and 147 teachers for the 2025 academic year.
The shooting comes months after another attack at a school in southern Thailand's Hat Yai district in February, when a teacher was killed and a student was injured after a gunman opened fire on the campus.
