A Government Railway Police (GRP) sub-inspector has been transferred after a video purportedly showing him assaulting a passenger at Surat's Udhna Railway Station went viral on social media, triggering widespread criticism and raising concerns over police conduct.

The viral video, recorded by a bystander, allegedly shows a passenger being dragged by his hair, pushed to the ground and beaten by a police officer on the station platform. The woman filming the incident can be heard claiming that the man was on his way to his village when he was allegedly assaulted without provocation. The footage also shows another passenger retreating after witnessing the incident.

The incident has sparked outrage online, with many questioning the conduct of railway police and the safety of passengers at the busy station.

According to the Surat GRP, the incident occurred at around 8:30 am on Sunday when a special train bound for Jaynagar arrived at Udhna Railway Station. Police personnel were managing queues of passengers boarding the train. Officials said the passenger allegedly attempted to bypass the queue and board the train directly, following which the GRP sub-inspector assaulted him.

Surat GRP Deputy Superintendent of Police D.H. Gaur confirmed to India Today that the viral video was authentic and identified the officer as GRP Sub-Inspector R.M. Rathod, who was posted at Udhna Railway Station. Following the video's circulation on social media, Rathod was transferred to the Vadodara GRP Headquarters, and a departmental enquiry has been initiated into the incident.
