Hyderabad polytechnic students protest integration with Young India Skills University

Tensions prevailed in Hyderabad on Thursday as polytechnic students staged a road blockade protesting against G.O. Ms. No. 97, which proposes bringing government polytechnic colleges under the Young India Skills University (YISU) framework.

Students of the Government Institute of Leather Technology at Hyderabad's Raidurgam gathered and raised slogans against the government, demanding clarity over their academic future and the continuation of the existing polytechnic education system.

The students are opposing the proposed integration of government polytechnic colleges with YISU, saying the move could affect the existing academic system, career opportunities and future prospects of diploma students.

They have demanded that polytechnic education continue under the State Board of Technical Education and Training (SBTET) and the Education Department. The students are seeking clear assurances from the government about the future of polytechnic education.

POLICE DETAIN PROTESTERS

Police personnel reached the protest site after the road blockade disrupted traffic on the Raidurgam road. They asked the students to disperse, but the protesters refused to vacate the road.

Police subsequently detained several students. Visuals from the protest showed police personnel removing some students from the protest site.

The protesting students also alleged that police manhandled some protesters, including women students.

STUDENTS DEMAND WITHDRAWAL OF GO 97

The students said they would continue their agitation until the government withdraws G.O. 97 and provides clear assurances regarding the future of polytechnic education.

The protest has centred on concerns over the proposed shift of government polytechnic colleges under the YISU framework and its possible impact on students pursuing diploma courses.
