Three rain-related deaths in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region on Thursday have raised fresh concerns over civic preparedness and public safety during the monsoon. While a 60-year-old man died after falling into an uncovered manhole during drainage repair work in Mumbai's Sakinaka, a 42-year-old woman and a 17-year-old girl were electrocuted in separate incidents in Thane district after coming into contact with electrified rainwater.

The first electrocution occurred in Dombivli's Hanuman Nagar, where Shashi Rahul Chakr (42) allegedly came into contact with electricity from a live power line lying on a waterlogged road. According to local residents, the woman had stepped out of her house to buy breakfast for her children when she walked through rainwater that had become electrified after a power line reportedly fell on the road.

Residents rushed to rescue her, but the electric current was so strong that she died on the spot. Shashi is survived by her husband, Rahul Chakr, and two young children. The incident sparked outrage among locals, who accused Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) of negligence and demanded strict action against the officials responsible, along with improved electrical safety measures during the monsoon. Tilaknagar Police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the incident.

17-YEAR-OLD GOT ELECTROCUTED

In another tragic incident, a 17-year-old girl, identified as Aaliya, died after being electrocuted in Mumbra, Thane district. Police said the teenager, a resident of B-Wing of Yasmin Park, had stepped outside her residential building during heavy rainfall when she came into contact with rainwater that had become electrically charged.

Family members and local residents rushed her to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Police have sent the body for post-mortem and initiated an investigation to ascertain how the rainwater became electrified and whether any negligence was involved.

Following the incident, local corporator Shoaib Dongre visited the spot and urged the administration to conduct a comprehensive inspection of electrical infrastructure in the area. He also called for immediate measures to prevent similar tragedies during the ongoing monsoon season.

The two incidents have once again highlighted concerns over exposed electrical infrastructure and the risks posed by waterlogging during heavy rains. Authorities are investigating both cases to determine accountability and prevent the recurrence of such fatal accidents.
