A teenage student allegedly delivered a baby inside a school campus in Hyderabad's Golconda and threw the newborn from the second floor of the building, killing the infant, police said.
The incident came to light after staff members at the Telangana Minority Residential Educational Institution Society (TMREIS) residential school noticed a newborn lying outside the school building and immediately informed the police.
A police team reached the spot and launched an investigation. Officers examined CCTV footage from the campus, which allegedly led them to the 18-year-old student at the institution.
According to the preliminary investigation, the student was around eight months pregnant. Police suspect that she delivered the baby inside the school premises before allegedly throwing the newborn from the second floor of the building. The infant sustained fatal injuries in the fall and died on the spot.
The baby's body was shifted for a postmortem examination, while forensic teams collected evidence from the scene to aid the investigation.
Police have registered a case under the relevant provisions related to the murder of the newborn. Investigators are also examining the circumstances surrounding the student's pregnancy, including the identity of the child's father and whether anyone else was aware of the pregnancy or had any role in the incident.
Authorities are expected to question school officials, staff members and others associated with the institution as part of the ongoing investigation. Further investigation is underway.
