Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday likened the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh to “Angad’s foot”, asserting that it could not be dislodged and would return to power in next year’s Assembly elections.

“The BJP government in Uttar Pradesh is like Angad’s foot. Nobody can move it. The BJP is going to form the government again. There should be no doubt about it,” Shah said.

Congress MP Imran Masood hit back, alleging that the BJP’s grip on power depended on the Election Commission.

“Yes, this is ‘Angad’s foot’ as long as there is the Election Commission. The Election Commission itself has become ‘Angad’s foot’. We will uproot this ‘foot’ and throw it away,” Masood said.

The reference is to an episode in the Ramayana in which Angad plants his foot in Ravana’s court and challenges those present to move it.

SHAH TARGETS OPPOSITION OVER ‘VOTE THEFT’ CLAIMS

Addressing the BJP’s state working committee meeting in Lucknow, Shah also rejected the opposition’s allegations of vote theft, comparing them to a team blaming the umpire after losing a match.

“After losing the match, they are blaming the umpire and alleging vote theft,” he said, adding that the BJP was ready for a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Parliament.

The Union Home Minister also targeted Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, claiming that his party would remain out of power in Uttar Pradesh for the next 30 years.

“The people of Uttar Pradesh will not forgive even your third generation,” he said.

He said the BJP would implement the Uniform Civil Code in the state if it returned to power and urged party workers to focus on securing a third consecutive term.
